Gojogo

Gojogo

Gojogo is an unusual quartet that combines the Western sounds of classical and jazz with the rhythmic traditions of India.  The instrumentation includes violin, electric guitar, bass, tabla, and dholki, a double-headed drum from Northern India.  Some songs also feature electronic samples and drum kit.  Gojogo performs original music composed collaboratively by the four performers, each drawing upon a different musical tradition and training. Compositions feature improvisation over structured forms, creating space for spontaneity and a medium to present each unique instrument.  Gojogo challenges itself to create repertoire that incorporates the eccentricities of its various instruments and musical styles.  The result is a sound that defies the borders of any specific genre.

Matt Small Chamber Ensemble

The quintet (bass, piano, sax, clarinet, violin) blends elements of a classical ensemble with those of a flexible jazz/improvisatory group. Paula Dreyer (piano), Kymry Esainko (piano), Mitch Marcus (sax), Steve Adams (sax), Rachel Condry (clarinet), and Sarah Jo Zaharako (violin) are some of the Bay Area's most talented players, assembled for this project. The Ensemble's repertoire is comprised of Small's recent compositions written for this instrumentation.

Perspective Series at The Red Poppy Art House

Perspective is a most unusual concert series that celebrates the talent and diversity of the Bay Area’s finest musicians. Each concert presents a theme designed to entice performers to break away from
their usual performance style and pilot something new. Five or six
musicians are invited to compose and perform a few acoustic pieces for each show, creating a program that is entirely fresh and unique. Red Poppy provides an intimate setting to experience these acoustic experiments. It is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy favorite musicians while sampling something new.

Kara Davis - Project Agora

Kara Davis and Project Agora

Choreographer Kara Davis and Sarah Jo Zaharako began their collaborative partnership in 2005 at a time when each was facing personal and professional turning points. Davis and Zaharako’s collaborative process begins and ends with improvisation. Working side by side from the conception of a new work, they improvise on an idea, translate details and artistic concepts into their individual disciplines, then teach the structure of the piece to their dance and musical ensembles, allowing space for the dancers and musicians to connect and interact with one another in performance. This multidisciplinary relationship has informed each of their work in ways impossible to simulate solely within their individual fields. Further, it generates a deeper dialogue between dance and music that focuses on interdependency rather than dictatorship.
